COMING SOON:

ALFREDS KALNIŅŠ classic opera BAŅUTA (1920) is coming to Toronto!

November 16, 2022 7:00pm at Innes Town Hall Theatre, Innes College, 2 Sussex Avenue, Toronto. General public: $20.00 / Free for U of T students.

Once described by New York Times critic Bernard Holland as a “four-act three-hour mixture of 13th century fact and myth. The protagonists are brave and bloodthirsty, the lovers star-crossed.” That original version of Baņuta remains in the standard repertoire of the Latvian National Opera to this day!

A new filmed version, which will receive its Canadian premiere on November 16, is a completely re-imagined production that combines opera, music performance and cinematography into one feature length film. Director Franziska Kronfoth and dramaturg Evarts Melnalksnis reinterpret this story about a young women fighting for love amidst the trauma of war to invoke the collective and timeless experience of women who have suffered through wars in Eastern Europe and are suffering again today in Ukraine and across the globe.
